The men’s national team defeated 2-1 by USA vs Panama

ATLANTA (June 27, 2024) – In their second group stage match at the 2024 Copa América, the U.S. Men’s National Team faced Panama and took the lead, but ultimately lost 2-1. The team competed with 10 players for more than 70 minutes following an early red card. With a record of 1-1 and three points, the USA will play Uruguay in the Group C final on July 1 (9 p.m. ET; FS1, Univision, TUDN, Fútbol de Primera Radio) in an attempt to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the eighteenth minute, American winger Tim Weah was sent off in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, capping a heated match full of incidents in front of 59,145 spectators. Four minutes later, striker Folarin Balogun gave the unflinching USMNT the lead. However, goals from César Blackman and José Fajardo of Panama (the latter with just seven minutes left in the second half) sealed the defeat.

As Group C play progressed, head coach Gregg Berhalter started the same lineup that led the USA to a 2-0 victory over Bolivia on Saturday in an attempt to keep up the momentum. This was the first time he had used the same starting lineups for back-to-back games since the 2021 Gold Cup, but on Thursday, Weah’s dismissal came at the end of a difficult,dramatic and tense opening half.
The U.S. celebrations were cut short in the fifth minute when a VAR review nullified a goal by midfielder Weston McKennie, causing the first twist in the story. Goalkeeper Matt Turner of the United States was injured in a hard collision with César Blackman of Panama in the twelfth. Blackman charged at Turner, who rose high and landed hard, but decided to continue after receiving treatment on the pitch for several minutes for his injured left leg.

The rapid exchange of passes paralysed the defence, giving Balogun enough time to unleash an incredible first-time strike off the inside of the right post. The goal was the AS Monaco player’s second of this Copa América and his fifth in 14 appearances for the United States.
However, four minutes later, Blackman held off Robinson and steered a low shot between US centre backs Chris Richards and Tim Ream and inside the left post, deflecting it off Weston McKennie and levelling the score.

However, Los Canaleros took the lead in the 83rd minute when substitute forward José Fajardo beat Horvath from close range. Panama’s pressure proved to be too much.
The desperate United States were unable to find an equaliser, even after Adalberto Carrasquilla of Panama was sent off in the 88th minute for a hard foul on Pulisic, which restored numerical parity. On the final opportunity for the USA, Richards headed Pulisic’s stoppage-time free kick over the crossbar. Ultimately, Panama’s continued control (73.6% to 26.4%) and prompt physicality Over ninety-plus minutes, the match was shaped by 19 fouls to four.
The USA, who still leads the series 17-3-7, was defeated by Panama for the third time in its history. Since taking over in the summer of 2020, Los Canaleros have improved under Danish coach Thomas Christiansen, moving up from 81st to 43rd in the FIFA World Ranking. Panama prevailed on penalty kicks in the Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal of the previous year, and the two teams shared their 2021–22 World Cup qualifying series. Panama, who is currently behind the United States in Group C due to goal differential, outplayed the Americans on Thursday with strength and perseverance.
Now, as Group C comes to an end, the USMNT’s Copa América destiny will be decided on July 1. In Kansas City, Missouri, the United States(1-1-0) will play Uruguay, the 15-time champion, while simultaneously in Orlando, Florida, Panama and Bolivia will square off. In two of its previous four Copa América appearances, the USA has progressed past the group stage. It advanced to the semifinals in 1995 and 2016 after leaving early in 1993 and 2007.
